Title: “Who Do You Say That I Am?”

Scripture: Gospel of Matthew 16:15–16

“He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”

Devotional Thought

Jesus’ question to His disciples is as alive today as it was when He first asked it: “Who do you say that I am?”

It’s not a question that can be answered by borrowed words or secondhand knowledge. It reaches deeper than what we’ve heard, read, or been taught—it calls for a response shaped by personal encounter.

Many people can explain who Jesus is. Fewer can testify to how they’ve experienced Him.

We come to know Him through Scripture, through what is written. But knowing begins to transform into something deeper when we bring what we read into prayer. In that place of communion, truth becomes life.

Samuel Rutherford once wrote, “The sweetest communion that Christ seeks of us on earth is prayer.” It is in prayer that knowledge becomes relationship. It is there that Jesus is no longer distant, but near—speaking, shaping, and revealing Himself.

If Jesus is the Word made flesh, then every time we open Scripture with a seeking heart, we are invited to partake of Him. This is more than reading—it is receiving. More than learning—it is communing.

And as we commune with Him, something changes. What we receive becomes nourishment not only for us, but for others. Our experience becomes “bread” that we can share—a living testimony, not just information.

Reflection Questions

  • Who is Jesus to me right now—not in theory, but in experience?

  • Am I relating to Him personally, or only understanding Him intellectually?

  • What has He been showing me lately through His Word and through prayer?

  • Who in my life needs the “bread” of what I’ve received from Him?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You ask me today, “Who do you say that I am?”

Lead me beyond knowledge into true relationship.
Teach me to meet You in Your Word and to know You in prayer.
Let what I read become life within me.

Draw me into deeper communion with You,
that I may not only know You—but experience You.

And as I do, make me a vessel to share Your truth, Your love, and Your grace with others.

Amen.

Daily Practice

Set aside intentional time today—even just a few minutes—to sit with Jesus in prayer.
Read a portion of Scripture slowly. Pause. Reflect. Speak to Him about what stands out.

Let it become more than words—let it become communion.
